January 15, 1998 Deadline: Call for Papers for Midwestern
Anthology:
- Vision: Our aim is to map the voices of Midwestern
women by publishing work that describes the diverse concerns,
themes, styles, and literary traditions of women authors and artists
living in or writing about the Midwest. The new Jane's Stories
will strive to build on and expand the success of its prototype,
the first Jane's Stories: An Anthology of Work by Midwestern Women
(called Jane's Stories I.)
- Themes/settings: Work accepted for publication
will be centered in women's experiences and be written by women
writers who now live in or were born in the Midwestern states.
Priority will be given to works that are set in the Midwest, but
this will not preclude publication of strong work set elsewhere.
In any case, all works must exhibit a strong sense of place and
identity with the Midwest or Midwestern literary traditions.
- Categories: We will read fiction or nonfiction
to 3000 words; creative nonfiction and poetry. Short plays are
also welcome. Book excerpts are acceptable if they stand on their
own. We also welcome black and white line art or photographs,
and monochromatic designs.
- Manuscript Requirements: Previously published
works with clear rights will be considered. Simultaneous submissions
are acceptable if we receive instantaneous notification of acceptance
elsewhere. Hard copy must be double-spaced on one side of 8.5"
by 11" paper. Single spacing is acceptable for poetry. Submissions
should be printed in letter-quality only; clean photocopies will
do. Electronic submissions are encouraged on disks in MAC format.
(Conversion of PC disks to MAC format can be done easily and inexpensively
at many computing centers, including Kinko's.) No e-mail submissions,
please. Name, address, and phone/fax numbers must appear on a
separate cover sheet, which should be paper-clipped - not stapled
-- to the work. The title of work only should appear at the top
of each page. Also submit 3-5 sentences of biographical information
on a separate sheet. Payment will be one copy of anthology.
Put enough postage on it when you send it. Include a stamped,
self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for return of
work that is not accepted, or state that you do not want work
returned in your cover letter. If you need verification that your
work has been received, enclose a self-addressed, stamped post
card with the title of your work. We will endeavor to respond
to all submissions within 45 days of the deadline.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: JANUARY 15, 1998. Work arriving after
this date will not be considered. For a sample of Jane's Stories
I, send $10, payable to Wild Dove. Work should be sent to Jane's
Stories Editors, c/o Wild Dove, PO Box 789, Palatine, IL 60078-0789.
