Jenny Armstrong, folksinger, storyteller, musician

A member of Chicago's "first family of folk," Jenny is a third generation singer and storyteller. For the past four years she has followed in her father's footsteps and piped open the University of Chicago Folk Festival. She can frequently be heard on WFMT's Midnight Special as well as at dozens of area schools, libraries, churches and festive events. - In addition to performing, Jenny teaches Scottish bagpipes, traditional fiddle and banjo styles and folk dancing. She is a sought-after teacher at old-time music camps and Suzuki Institutes across the country. [Note from the Listkeeper: yes, Jenny is my "very patient" bagpipe teacher.]
In 1992 Jenny premiered her one-woman show WomanSong; a musical biolgraphy that empowers each of us to validate the stories of our own lives. Northlight Theatre produced WomanSong in the spring of 1995 to great acclaim. Jenny has sinced produced her second autobiograhical show; Carry the Song which premiered at Northlight Theatre in December 1995.

She has recently put out a great new CD Dancing in the Circle, which includes Jenny on the pipes (for the first time on her albums), as well as fiddle, guitar, banjo (and feet :)) and, of course, vocals.

Footsteps Theatre Company produces theatre from a woman's point of view while providing room for that view to grow and change. . . By presenting plays by women or about women that are conceived, directed, and designed so that we begin to see ouselves as unlimited, empowered, and able to do anything we choose, we can help spawn a whole generation of women who revel in their own strength and creativity. Footsteps most recent 1994-95 season included an all-female cast presenting Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Jean Adamak, Jean Anouilh's Antigone and A Chocolate Sandwich -- a one-woman show written and performed by Ms. Poppy Champlin and produced by the Women's Writes Project.
